Early voting opened today in Benallilo county. I went to the Student Union Building (one of several locations) about 10:30 this morning - they opened at 10. The line was all the way down the corridor, from the South end to the middle of the building (by the stairs). They are using a glass fronted office which was until recently the administrative offices for the SUB management company as the apos;officeapos;. Itapos;s there that they check your address, determine your precinct, and give you the ballot paper. You return to the same room to actually record your vote.
Anyway I figured the line would die down later, so opted to leave it and try again about 3pm. I got back there at 3:20 to find the line was just as long I joined it this time, and watched as it grew ever longer behind me. As I waited I noticed a lot of activity going on in the area designated for the actual polling. About 10 more polling booths were being erected. The polling staff had pinned Disney-style posters to the wall - "your wait is 30 minutes from here". I was finally handed by ballot at 4:05pm, a wait of 45 minutes. And this is for early voting
I asked the polling officer at the door how many people had cast a ballot today - he said they had handed out over 1000 ballots, just at that one location. He also said apparently this scene is being repeated all over Albuquerque. No-one wants to wait for Nov 4th, when the lines will surely be very long.
The Albuquerque ballot had in addition to the general election questions about 20 judgeships, a couple of committees, five or six amendments to the constitution, and ten or more bond measures - it was packed. We use mark-sensing paper ballots, so filling in the bubbles (on both sides of the form) took about 10 minutes. (A few years ago I was one of many campaigning for the return of paper ballots over the no-audit-trail electronic machines we had back then. I am SO glad we now have something that can actually be counted if necessary.)
Feeding my ballot into one of a large bank of mark sensor ballot apos;safesapos; I noted the number on the machine increment from 130 to 131. It gives me some sense of security to see that. Although the guy behind me did wonder allowed "These look awfully like commercial paper shredders"
Mission accomplished.
